Representation

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The photos I used range from being black and white which is on the front page, this photo has a rough greyscale look which helps tie in with the colour scheme of the magazine, in the image he looks content, but it shows that he means business with what he is doing, he is looking directly at the camera which shows his direct look. His gesture is a very serious look but not too serious which means he’s keeping it serious, the hat which is a fashion in today’s clothing, which would indicate a “hipster” youth, also his clothes are or an urban looking style to keep it in set with the city feel. The image makes it appear urban by the rustic look, with the greyscale setting. There is some slang used but not a lot which keeps it a serious but yet laid back magazine, in the article it is set to be like a conversation between two people, so it’s kept in a chatty casual way. The attitude implications of this magazine would be a party type and people who just like generally having fun, as the type of music is very centred around that style of partying. There is the stereotype of that youths today are all party and fun, which my magazine does show or indicate. The gender would be male dominated but its not to say females wouldn’t read it or wouldn’t be interested in the magazine, neither is there any particular racial group it is aimed for, it’s just aimed for anyone who enjoys the type of music and having a good time partying.

Skills Development

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt a great deal since my preliminary task, I believe that my Photoshop CS3 skills have improved greatly. I have been able to make more of a successful looking magazine from the skills learnt, such as the effects on pictures, colour blending and font styles to make it more of a unique looking final product. My time management has been slightly pushed but the extra time I have put in has helped me advance in keeping on track with the product. Also, looking at the examples of magazines rather than trying to make it from scratch, overall all the different methods I used of making a good final product were put into place, making it a lot more advanced than my preliminary task.

Technologies

6) What have your learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

The use of Adobe Photoshop CS3 has really helped me achieve a better outcome of my magazine than I imagined/pictured, just toying with some of the ideas helped me get some of the results in my final project. I also used many areas around my college to take my pictures for my magazine, some areas with more light than others to get different results, some didn’t work and some did better than others, the lighting was key to the success of the pictures. My plan for my magazine stayed closely to the final image, with the use of a dark background but with lighter fonts and pictures to contrast the sort of party feel to it, dark but bright and Photoshop helped me show these ideas to their full potential. Although at first it appears advanced and quite hard to understand, I eventually got to grips with using the many different tools that the program came with. The use of Adobe Photoshop 3 has really helped me achieve a better outcome of my magazine than I imagined/pictured, just toying with some of the ideas.

Addressing my audience

5) How did you address your audience?

In my magazine I tried to keep it casual enough for people to read, as it’s not an upmarket magazine but neither is it a rebellious one, the layout is a casual layout with a blend of different colours and an edgy style. Some of the words used help tie in with the “LINGO” of the genre of music with I guess would link it closely with the image, in contains an article of a DJ explaining other genres of music. I tried to keep the colours bright to entice my target audience who would generally be into the bright colours and “rave scene”, the association is kept with some of the words used and the imagery. On the contents page it tells you what articles there are in a chatty casual way, it does not directly address the reader. This magazine, would not apply to any of the older generation because of the wording, but would apply to younger to mid generations.

Target Audience

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

My target audience is for anyone who lives mainly in an urban area like in a city, possibly a town, simply because the music is based very urbanely, played on mainstream radio stations based in urban areas, also for people with high income due to the nature of the music, people who read music magazines generally are interested in making it, which costs a lot in this genre of music. Also the adverts in this type of magazine would be advertising a lot of music technology or anything related to technology. The magazine aims at a more male gender basis but will still obviously appeal to any females interested in that particular genre of music, the age of this gender can differ from around 18 years of age, all the way up to around 30, simply because the technology involved and the imagery of this music is played in mainly clubs where older people would tend to go. The magazines buyers would tend to be more upper middle class down to middle class (B, C1, C2) and because of the nature of the magazine it would be in urban areas, which again relates back to the clubbing scene.
Fade In is a magazine based around the mainstream area but would also bring any of those from other psychographic classes into it, simply because it’s a type of music many people enjoy, but it would definitely be a more mainstream type.
Lifestyles of the audience would involve having a fair bit of money, being an urban magazine means those living in urban areas, places of parties and such events, also its not a type of music that comes cheap to make or succeed in, costing you thousands of pounds for decent gear to follow in the footsteps of these types of musicians.

Institutions Evaluation

3) What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product and why?

I would like my magazine to be apart of a small publisher group simply because it would appeal better to have all or most of the editorial rights to the magazine, and I would like to keep the magazine more about the music rather than the advertising which would be more or less taken away going with a big distribution company, a small company like DENNIS would help keep the magazine a more or a specialist item rather than an advertising space. The magazine will only really apply to anyone living in urban areas, so distributing it to areas that wouldn’t buy into the magazine would be a waste of money. Keeping the editorial rights would ensure I could keep my magazine the way I would like it and the audience, rather than have a large company taking those rights and using some of the space for advertisement campaigns, but, there will still be some ads within the magazine relating to the music.

Forms and Conventions Evaluation

1) In what ways does your media use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My main focus of the genre in my magazine is based towards electronic music, which would come under electro music. The conventions of having a very technological edgy feel to it, gives it that sort of underground party feel to it the mix of bright and dark colours mixed together gives it that feel of lights in a club which would usually be in a dark setting. DJMAG (picture attached on the bottom) is a good example of a magazine I analysed in my own time to try and incorporate some ideas, which really showed me some good ideas to think about using in my own magazine. I wouldn’t say it filled a gap in the market but it’s definitely an area of the market which isn’t looked into very much or read about, probably because the lack of choice there is and the ROCK magazines which overrule the market quite dominantly. I stuck quite close to the conventions so that it wouldn’t become too much of a problem when it came down to the final product, such as not having the right image, thus leaving it quite empty looking or even confusing. The name FADE-IN comes from the technique of a DJ fading in and out tracks which helps tie in with the genre of music. The front page colour scheme has a dark image which would indicate having a club feel to it, as you can not see a DJ’s face and makes it seem more underground, the bright colours would go with the lights that would be in the club and the edgy font slants show a quirky image setting a “roughed up” look. On the double page spread, it has the same setting as before with the dark and light colours mixed together, in the text there are pull quotes which are put in a different font colour to help it stand out from the rest of the text, the imagery colour is set to an orange lighting to help blend in with the rest of the page so that there is not too many different colours on the page, the gig guide has a glowing effect on it so that even when it’s a small part of the page it still stands out on the page, the yellow danger sign with the font writing was a hard graphic to create successfully especially with the colour choice, so, it was given a roughed up look to blend in some of the black background to help the font stand out. The contents page has only 3 basic colours of red, white and black, which again contrast the bright and dark colour look which is sustained through the magazine. The subtitle headings have a funky glow coming from them with and edgy graphitti look. Over the magazine I tried to keep all headings (mastheads and subtitles) bold, with the colours and glows so that they caught the eye well, rather than having a dark single coloured magazine.

My own music magazine; initial ideas

The title of my magazine will be called Dissolve and it will be aimed the the middle to middle upper class portion of the population for people for the ages of anything between 18-30 years old. The magazine will be based mainly on electronic music artists, DJs and electro bands. which plays a large part in today's music scene and will also contain small bits of information on new technology which would usually be quite expensive which is why it is based to the middle to middle upper class population.
the style of the magazine will have a very modern look with an edgy style, the colours would be varied but not too overwhelming.

Planning my College Magazine

To plan my college magazine, I had first drew out a rough sketch of what the magazine cover would have on it and where, but this was only a rough guide and the finished product wasn't overly the same as the sketch. I then took some of my ideas frmo other magazines, like the contents page of a magazine and the front cover of another magazine, I looked at several so I could try out different ideas. By doing a target audience questionnaire I was able to gather the most important aspects of the magazine by the higher amount of votes on certain topics were obviously the more "excitable" topics than those that had fewer, so this helped me judge what topics could be in the magazine. The results also influenced what cover titles their were, so that people could well be drawn to my magazine by the interesting topics that may lay inside the magazine. When I analysed other college magazines I picked out the sort of "querky" type magazine cover named "SOUP" which had a variety of different topics inside and had a very odd picture background. During the process of planning my cover and contents page, I had obtained several ideas from the different magazines I had picked out, type of colours, font, picture, placings etc.... This influenced my ideas into my planning of my magazine cover and contents page.

College Magazine: My Original Photograph

Preliminary Finished Products

A) On my front page, it contains a very dominant "warm" colour tone, with oranges and pink, this gives a overal bright attracting magazine cover. The font is also set in this scheme and stands out relatively well on the front cover, the font is set in a sort of "laid back" chatty style and not so formal. The picture in the background is of a boy and a girl appearing to be happy; this gives a good feel to the college and very inviting, this shot is a medium shot camera angle with a straight on view of the two people. The finishing quality to the background is a grainy vibrant look with an almost negative effect. The lighting appears to be more brighter on the people which is a good symbol of a person college, and making the students look like they come first.
The contents page matches the colour scheme like the one on the front page with again bright colours which I would say is an enticing piece of imagery. The style of the contents page follows the trend of the sort of laid back look, by having the different shapes and placements within the contents page.
My product I would say is appropriate for my target audience for the reason that the colours and laid back style is very "catchy", which is appealing to 16-18 year olds, and perhaps a little more out of that range as well.
B) The products work well in the fact that they are based for the certain age range of having a laid back catchy style, the only problem is the age range wouldn't extend that far and woldn't appeal to a larger audience, if people were perhaps looking for something more serious, it wouldn't really entice those with the vibrant colours. But the colours did indeed work well for the catchy vibe I think, giving it a boost in that something different.
C) As a result of doing the preliminary task I was able to extend my use of Photoshop, and experiment with different ideas. and also be able to evaluate work with the use of content and technical coding. When using the photoshop program I discovered many different uses like the photo filter and using the legacy contrast to brightness setting which got me some new effects I will use in future projects.

Glorious Soup

Get your SOUP out
